Summary:
Work involves responsibility for circulation service using automated circulation system. Duties include checking books in and out, shelving library materials, patron assistance, data inputting, and telephone answering. Assists Director with the planning and coordination of programs and events.
Supervision Received:
Works under the immediate supervision of the Library Director

Duties and Responsibilities
Circulation Desk
-
Check out books, magazines and other library holdings in and out at the circulation desk and collects fines using an automated circulation system

Replace books, magazines and other library holdings on shelves
-
Check in incoming library materials using an automated circulation system and inspects them for damages
-
Perform routine library computer functions

Assist individuals in applying for library cards

Respond to general information requests by telephone and in person referring difficult requests to the Director

Responsible for the general appearance of the library

Help establish and maintain a high customer service performance standard

Greet all individuals to the library

Assist individuals with computer problems and refer more complex problems to the Library Director or other staff

Programming

Assist Director with programs (Adults & Children)

Organize volunteers

Other
-
Make purchase recommendations on books, videos and other library acquisitions

Attend library meetings

Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements
Must be able to work a minimum of 4 hours per day, at least 4 days per week – including evenings & weekends. Primarily indoors. Occasional lifting and ability to push loaded book cart, to lift or maneuver onto cart loads up to 50 pounds and to carry cartons of books. Ability to bend, stoop and lift for prolonged periods in cramped spaces. Ability to sit and use computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal, for extended periods of time.
General Skills:

Have library open by the hours as set forth by the Library Board of Trustees

While working, always stay busy by shelving books or doing other library work

Understand all aspects of the circulation process of library materials

Be familiar with policies and procedures for use of the Internet Computer

Operate fax machine, phone, computers and other equipment at the library

Shelve materials returned to circulation

Must be able to climb on step stool if necessary

Must be able to calculate charges for services rendered at the library
-
Must be willing to take additional training when necessary

Assist patrons coming into the library with locating materials

Be courteous at all times to patrons

Be courteous and work well with staff

Be at work on time and be able to use computer to clock in and out

Help with training other part-time employees or volunteers
-
Keep the library neat, orderly and presentable at all times

Need computer skills

When closing, ensure all doors are locked, computers closed down and alarm set
